The History Behind McKean McGregor
Early Beginnings at the Bendigo Saleyards
William McKean and Ralph McGregor both worked for Herbert Spencer & Co. at the Bendigo Saleyards in the early 1900s. In 1911, Herbert Spencer retired from the business, prompting Mr McKean and Mr McGregor to form a new partnership known as McKean McGregor & Co. Gerald Gallagher, who had worked as a junior clerk at Spencer & Co, joined them as their clerk.

Formation of Two Family Firms
At the end of 1929, the original partnership was dissolved, resulting in the creation of two separate firms: W McKean & Co and Ralph H McGregor & Co, which commenced operations at the start of 1930.
Family Legacy and Leadership

Gerald Gallagher joined W. McKean & Co. as a partner alongside his mentor Mr McKean. Following William McKean's death in 1947, Gerald became sole proprietor and was joined by his brother Brendan. Gerald's sons, Kevin and Peter, entered the business in 1955 and 1961, respectively.

Ralph McGregor established his own firm in 1930 and was later joined by his son Jack. After Ralph's passing in 1945, Jack took over leadership until 1969, when Kevin Rea assumed control. Kevin's son Glenn joined the business in 1990, continuing the family tradition.

Reunification at the Bendigo Livestock Exchange

The two firms continued to operate independently at the Bendigo Saleyards-later known as the Bendigo Livestock Exchange-from 1930 until 2008. On June 30, 2008, the companies reunited in a merger to form McKean McGregor Pty Ltd.

Expanding Our Reach into North-West Victoria and Beyond
McKean McGregor's strong foundation in livestock agency work has naturally extended beyond Bendigo, leading to relationships across Mildura, the north-west of Victoria, and far-western New South Wales. Initially servicing these regions through livestock clients, our presence has steadily grown to encompass real estate, bringing the same trusted service and deep regional knowledge to residential, rural, and commercial property markets in these areas.
